Duck lakes
Is there a rhyme or reason as to why some lakes (those on public land) are open to duck hunting and others are not? The G&F site lists some spots, but there are many other lakes either in the Flag area or WMs. Is it simply a matter of calling G&F about an individual lake to see if hunting is allowed? Does it change from year to year? Thanks in advance.

As far as I know you can hunt any lake up here by Flag except for Ashurst.

There aren't really any lakes or water holes up near Flagstaff. You shouldn't come up to hunt ducks, cause there won't be any around.....

Out of curiousity jdavid, why is Ashurst off limits? I didn't think that lake would have any restrictions...

Funny about the dog.....and, just kidding on my part. With all the water up here, and mormom lake full of great feeding areas I am hoping for a good duck/goose season. Give a shout if you head up, I am always looking for someone to shoot ducks with. Dave |

AZnative, in most areas game and fish tries to limit duck hunting in a few areas to give them a chance to escape all that steel shot flying through the air. I assume Ashurst was chosen because of the size of the lake and the amount of fishermen it receives. If you really want to see some ducks head to Kachina wetlands. It's a bunch of settling ponds and is also off limits to hunting! Man i can't wait to get out to mormon this year, i have 2 new lay down blinds just waiting to get used. Oh and did i mention i don't have a hunting buddy yet for the other blind!!!
